Tiffany Dunn is the latest chick on the block looking for pop stardom in 2011. The singer-songwriter/dancer is signed to Darkchild’s label under Epic Records, and she made a bit of noise online last year with her urban/pop/reggaeton hybrid single “Shut the Front Door (Got My Girls)”, but it didn’t really take off, so now she’s back with her next offering “Too Bad I Love You”.
The Darkchild produced track has a similar sound to another one of his hits, “The One” by Mary J. Blige — all throbbing bass, urban-pop and autotune. Unlike tunes by Katy Perry and Lady GaGa, Tiffany’s “Too Bad I Love You” doesn’t really contain an obviously huge hook, with the song keeping a steady pace and tempo the whole time to create something that becomes addictive after repeated listens, rather than just providing the listener with instant gratification.
Tiff does a nice job on the song’s music video, smackin’ her gum and whining about an annoying boyfriend in between scenes of some fly b-girl dance moves and a pretty wild breakdance solo.
With her blonde hair, killer choreography and urban beats, Tiffany could easily pass for a mixture of Ciara and Britney circa 2004. Unfortunately, 2004 and earlier seems like the era where Tiffany would’ve actually thrived — I mean, she’s still doing urban beats, dancing her ass off, she has a normal, gimmick-free image, and she actually spelled the title of her latest single correctly instead of using text speak (“2 Bad I Luv U”).
I’m not sure how a pop artist like Tiffany is going to fare in today’s market, but if you give her a real try then you might just become a fan. I know I already am.
