Three Types of Simile

Here's something I wrote while deeply bored some time ago. As you can imagine, I'm still desperately bored - too bored even to blog propely, though I've started posting again over at CTS. I had a volume of Hardy and a cup of tea to hand when I wrote it.

The first type of simile simply tries to invoke some genuine quality of a real object through reference to another object. The relevant cliché is “as hot as an oven”. With these “concrete” similes, the danger for the writer is that cliché is difficult to avoid; exaggeration also creeps up on you. But the possibility is always there for a simple simile of this type to contain other, hidden meanings or connotations. Take this example from Thomas Hardy’s poem ‘The Clock Winder’: “It is as dark as a cave”. Nothing too complicated there, the image is clear, the reference, obvious. But think for a while on the nature of caves. Claustrophobic, tapering into ancient rocks, the home of unknown streams, stalactites and stalagmites, the origins of human civilisation, hidden realms. The darkness of the very ordinary night Hardy is explaining now takes on a more psychological aspect. The depth of similes such as these is, of course, entirely up to the writer. But writers and students should be encouraged to think very carefully about the objects they choose to place into their similes.

The second type does the same thing, but invokes non-existent objects that people are nonetheless familiar with. For example: “Quick feet as light/As the feet of a sprite” from the poem ‘Signs and Tokens’. It is easy to see the reference, even though there are (as far as we know) no such things as sprites. The word “sprite” itself has become almost a metaphor for quickness and lightness. With this kind of simile a writer can convey some sense of numinosity or give an ethereal atmosphere to a scene or idea. A clichéd example of this type would be something like, “She looked like an angel”. A better one would be this, from Hardy’s poem ‘Apostrophe to an Old Psalm Tune’, “..sweet as angels’ laughters”.

The third type of simile intends to reference the object or quality only vaguely or slightly to anything, and is instead a satire, or a play with language for its own sake. This is exceptionally difficult to write appropriately. Most usually it is done to make the reader question the writing process and think about the difficulty of communication. It is mainly associated with modernist and post-modernist writing. An example would be “The years were like the cries of children”, in which a sense of fear is invoked, but otherwise the similarities are slight or non-existent.

These types of simile can also be adapted, extended or cut. Often a writer will slide the usual expressions into “hot like an oven” or “oven-hot” or “with the heat of an oven” or some other phrase. To avoid cliché and extend the image – though this has to be done with caution – a writer might take a simile like “she looked like an angel” and change it to “she looked like an angel, full of its sadness for humankind” – the idea being to give the object of reference more detail in order to make the image more complex. In the following quotation Hardy doubles his simile to give it more shades of meaning:
From tides the lofty coastlands screen
Come smitings like the slam of doors
Or hammerings on hollow floors

(from ‘The Wind’s Prophecy’)

lust fades to rust

My friend Erica and I took these photos before a show we went to. I was inspired by the change of the season; the new warm colors, chilly air and feeling of nostalgia that fall seems to bring to me.

antique inspiration

Since the 60s is probably my favorite time period for both fashion, music, film, and literature, I decided to post some 60s icons...
From Top:
Model Jean Shrimpton
Mrs Robinson
the imfamous icon, Twiggy
Wife of Eric Clapton Pattie Boyd
Andy Warhol and stone, Mick Jagger
Elvis and Pricilla
Jane Birkin
Nico of The Velvet Underground
The lovely songbird, Marianne Faithful

Today, I watched a film on three different poets that I was unfamiliar with called "Where The Soul Is": Lucille Clifton, W.S. Merwin, Robert Bly. It is basically just a series of interviews of the three and a couple of clips of various poetry readings. It was very inspiring for me and helped answer a lot of my questions about poetry and writing, Robert Bly was very spiritual and in tune with nature, his self, and presumably his soul. Lucille was extremely comical and had a confidence and spunky attitude and welcoming energy that I find very rare in most poets. I wouldn't label her a feminist per se (altough many would) but, she definatley speaks of society's shallow and unrealistic standards of beauty. Her poem, "poem to my uterus," was very funny. She is actually a professor at UCSC. Interesting, a new possibility for transfer options. My favorite of the three was, W.S. Merwin. He was so inteligent and the way he spoke of poetry made me much more at ease with my work. His poems are very story like and use simple diction, which works for his subject matter. His poems were very unexpectedly touching and dealt with human relationships. He explained the poetry is harder to write in modern day because of how language is distorted and vague due to the media and "professional liars" misuse. The best quote (of describing the appeal and passion that poetry creates was, "...when you hear a poem that speaks to you...you've heard it something you have always know...yet it's completely new."

"if you have to be sure...don;t write." -W.S. Merwin

Current Playlist

Yo La Tengo- today is the day
Leonard Cohen-chelsea hotel no. 2
Blonde Redhead-misery is a butterfly (brilliant and hauting lyrcis...beautiful)
M. Ward- post war
The Velvet Underground-sweet jane
Band of Horses-the funeral
bob dylan- like a rolling stone

These songs to me really reflect my nostalgic mood which, I feel has been induced by this wintery cold yet, sunny weather. It makes me feel reflective, more sensitive, and more in tune with both my senses and my emotion. It also of course, inspires me to write more frequently and I feel, better quality poetry.

Eye know you got a bad tattoo

This gem was sent to me by a reader. Thanks! I love the "painterly" style.

If anyone knows what's going on here, please let me know!

And this one... yeesh! It has everything! Spraypaint, tears, a rose, eyes... I wonder what the sad story behind it is.

the new girls...

It's time to forget about the "it girl" days of nicole richie, miss moss, lezlo, etc. The new fashion icons today, are strong beautiful females with talent, stylist sans style, and talent of their own.

1. Sacsha Pivovarova: This russian born model has not only been blowing up on the runways for over three years now but also, is an accomplished artist as well. While her drawings are mostly potraits of herself and fellow model friends like lovely Jessica Stam and Snejana Onopka, using obscure materials such as old wine and coffee. In 2007, her work was displayed at an art show in Paris for the first time. Last year, in Matthew Williamson's fall ready to wear she strutted the runway holding one of her own self potraits. In the modeling world, Sasha continues to grow as a model as well scoring several campaigns this season including Prada.

2. Emma Watson: Best known for playing the quirky-cute Heromoine Granger in the Harry Potter films, in the last couple years this it girl has been highly recognized and praised on the fashion scene. Sitting front row next to Gwenyth Paltrow at the BUrberry show, Emma flaunted a sexy golden mini dress. Last season she even scored the Burberry campaign. What i love most about Watson is her modesty and her seemingly positive attitude to tward acting. She is actually currently studying acting at Brown University which, I think is awesome that she chose to go to school despite her obvious financial stability.
She also dated the sexy Johnny Borrell of Razorlight!

3. Alice Dellal: This spunky/sexy model and it girl of the present has graced the runways, london party scene, and sexy lingerie brand, Agent Provacteur for about 2 years now. KNown for her rebellious attitude, sexy-punk style, and of course, that half shaved head, Alice has become the muse for many artists and designers including Alexander Wang (!). She recently refused to get rid of her signiture hair style when her agents told her she needed to in the interest of getting more jobs. I thought that was pretty bad ass. haha. Anyway, I think she is absolutely beautiful, and abstactly sexy.

4. Lara (hot hot hot) Stone: WOw, the photos above pretty much say it all. She is a true woman. Her body is bizarely perfect, her face (sexy brown eyes, peaches and cream complexion, and that sexy tooth gap) sits on top of a body of perfection and sex appeal (those fleshly breasts, long slender legs and beatifully sculpted arms!) Damn. Ressembling the 60s icon, Briggite Bardot, this talented model seems to exude sex appeal flawlessly while still maintaing the look of high fashion and chicness, which in my opinion, is very rare and difficult to do. Her emotion and attitude expressed in her photos always seems to have a pefect balance of the two. Sadly, she kind of labelled "the normal girl" in the modeling world which is ludicrious because she is still quite skinny in comparison to most women.

5. Clemece Posey: This soft and girlie frech beauty is also probably most recognized by the masses for her work in the Harry Potter series as well. However, in the recent years, Clemence has quickly gotten herself on the fashion radar. With her soft features, and beautiful pale blue eyes, this beauty landed the campaign with the likes of fellow icon Chloe Sevingy, for Chloe's new fragrance. The ads are stunning by the way. She has also been a frequnt to Chanel's shows in Paris sitting with Miss Watson and other it girls.

cool, cool people and cool cool things...

New Favorite Photogrpaher...Nicole Anne Robbins
Had the wonderful oppertunity to work with her. I love her photos because they are so minimal in setting and usually in makeup and styling and yet she somehow combines these abstract angles and lighting to create such bold and creative images. They are sexy, porvactive, aluuring and kind of quirky. Her photos really make you think twice about the concept.I also think she shoots nudity very well. She makes it artistic rather than just flat out sexy. Love love her work...
nicoleannerobbins.com check out her website...lots more awesome work!

Feeling much better than I was the other day, thank god.
I have been listening to a lot of mood enhancing music lately. For some reason listening to sad music when I am depressed somehow makes me feel better? Kind of a strange concept....but nonetheless true.

Here is my little playlist of the week...

The Brianjonestown Massacre- I've been waiting
Neil Young-down by the river
Elliott Smith-twilight
M. Ward-chineese translation
Zion I-silly puddy
Blonde redhead-misery is a butterfly
Band of horses-the funeral
Interpol-leif erikson
Bright Eyes-lua
Mazzy Star-look on down from the bridge

Pretty good "feel bad" music...haha but hey, these songs have been inspiring me to write some of my own poetry again

Here is a poem that I wrote the other night after going for a short drive in failed attempts to "clear my head" whatever that means...

Last drive with you

It's been two weeks and
it still feels new
and i desperately try
not to think of you...

the shadows in the night
and the dreams,
and the pain of
love's destined
bite

let me go, let me go.
and it won't.

So I took i drive on a chilly night
trying to forget when you said
you could make everything alright.
i lost again
congratulationts to you
for winning youe fight.

I let the wind drive my car-
for me, in hopes
that I could
erase you from my twisted
memory.

The wind was cold
and the air was old
the shadows came back
and my memeory of you
began to unfold.

haunting me was
shadows of lust
and then-
raindrops poured down on my
head bathing me carelessly
in abused trust.

I drove and I drove
and peered down darkness avenue
of vinatge memories and everything else
that I will never get ro renew.

i found your moldy coke can
in the back seat
where together
we laid
and I
had my last heartbeat.

Velvet underground played
sweet jane, sweet jane
just like when we left
the camp site
you made
where i looked across the lake
and wished upon the star over your head
that this sickly happiness
would never, ever fade.

The golden street light burned me
so i turned onto grand street
where i last went down on you
and i last held you and had you
and silently thanked you
and told you once again that
"i love you."

You said it back...
though your heart turned black.
everything you said in
your 4-runner on october 4th
on it's lost night...
murderous words...
murderous words...
and now there is no light.

The reasoning was stale
inside me, your truth
slowly unveiled and cutting me open with a poisonous
knife
like the most neauseating of turbulence
in a never ending flight...
please don't leave
please don't prove me right.

The wind took me home
and now I am all, all
alone.
I remember your smile,
and how i could see it glow from your eyes
here comes the knife again...
such a sickening surprise

sad, alone, and
i wish you'd fall off your throne

"love." silly, silly word.
though you said it yourself
"i am here for you!" and
"i love you!"

i love you too...
how could you?

How could you?

Best and Worst of Ready to Wear collections Spring 2010

Alexander wang

BEST!
From New York's fashion week the lovely and feminine Jill Stuart. Known for her flirty, feminine and sexy mini dresses and flowing silk blouses, Jill Start was probably my favorite of shows for NYC. I always the romance and femininity that her collection exude and how even with the highest of hemlines, her dresses always exude both sex appeal AND innocence. This collection however, I am even more impressed and (safe to say) in love with her because of how she added these tough, almost motor cycle-like accessorise and touches while staying true to her baby doll-like vibe. I love all the lace detail, soft colors, and silky fabrics mixed with some bad ass black, leather, and big black booties, and best of all, exaggerated shoulders and more defined structures!

Worst!
Okay, everyone who knows me well, knows that Alexander Wang is probably my favorite new New York designer. I love his ubercool skater girl style combined with understated sex appeal. HIs collection for fall ready to wear 2009 is still my one of my favorite collections of all time and still inspires me for this fall as well. However, this collection to me is very dull and too carelessly styled. I love boots and knee high socks and the whole sexy nerd concept that he seemingly used for this collection. However, to me, it did not translate properly on the runway. Perhaps it was the dull, thrown together hair styles, or the grungy makeup that through me off. But this collection was not the best in my eyes.

BEST!
Chanel Chanel Chanel. it seems so overplayed and pretty much used and abused to the rest of the world who doesn't truly appreciate the superb designs of Karl Lagerfeld and totes around knock offs with the tacky quilted double c's. But, I must say I truly respect Karl's designs because it seems as though every collection remains fresh, modern, and young but yet, somehow managed to remain timeless, maintaining the lady-like consistency of Coco Chanel's early designs. The chanel staples: tweed blazer, tights, sexy shoes, shift dress, etc. are always beautifully Incorporated in every show with a new twist to them keeping the line fresh, sexy, and best of all appealing and appropropriate for all ages! This collection is beautifully. I love use of the creamy neutrals and the subtle jewel embellishments and Lacey tweed. The ethereal and demure makes up of course, was flawless and enhanced the clothing. Well done, as usual.

The Undecided....?
Initially when I saw Chloe's line, I was a bit well, depressed. As one of my favorite lines, I always expect to see the same flowly, modest fabrics and fits, soft, sexy neurtal tones with a couple of unexpected shades toward the end and overall, an effortlessly chic and cool line that a lady can just throw on , walk out the door, and look fresh, natural, and put together without looking as though she spent hours perfecting her look. Well, I hated the sort of bag lady look that I feel that Chloe usually tends to avoid. It literally looked as though some of the models were drowning in their outfits. Then, however, I saw the all denim out fit. I cringed at first, bracing myself for what I was about to see, and then unexpectedly fell in love with this one look. As the show went on, I loved the collection more and more. Toward the end, there were beautifully crafted, Greek like, flowy dresses and less of that army-obsessed grandfather look. The hair was flat and dull, and not even in a cool, chic way. It was just straight up boring and gross looking. The makeup was minimal which was nice and expected from Chloe. So i don't really know about this one...you be the judge!

THE ABSOLUTE BEST-
Gile Deacon...I know I posted something about him and this collection yesterday but, I have to say that I have absolutely fallen in love with this British designer. After falling for him, I did some research and for last year's fashion week, he had a pac man themed show where the models actually wore pink helmets! It was so rad. Anyway, this collection was absolutely breathtaking. It was fresh, spunky, almost futuristic, with a sexy, cool, rocker girl vibe to boot! The main color palette was killer. Lots of neutrals beautifully interrupted by shocking corals, sea foam greens, lilacs, and the sexiest of all the black! The hair was awesome too...the models all had greasy looking "sex hair," if you will and some even rocked light pink and purple highlights...so unexpectedly sexy! The shaped of the clothes were very sexy and body conscious. Some were very fitted and clingy, others were lose with a short and sweet hemline. The use of gold tones was also perfectly used! Awesome, awesome line. ONe of my favorite designers now!

Other honorable mentions:
Marc by Marc Jacobs- sexy, cute, and Disney like! Definitely hip cool and chic.
Erin Wasson x RVCA- retro 90s grunge meets sexy modern new yorker! love love love.

On a different note...I have disocovered a new poet that I really love. James Tate. He is known for his surreal, dream like poems that usually display some kind of dark theme through telling a stange anectdote and usually using dialogue. I came across this simple yet beautifully haunting poem last night while reading for my creative writing course. It's called, "Why I will not get out of bed." I really connected with this poem because of my current depression after a failed relationship. The desperation and emtotional paralysis that he describes really speaks to me because I know how this emotional paralysis can actually turn into physical paralysis. I also love the sense of denial. We have all been there. Anway, here it is...

Why I Will Not Get Out of Bed

My muscles unravel
like spools of ribbon:
there is not a shadow

of pain. I will pose
like this for the rest
of the afternoon,

for the remainder
of all noons. The rain
is making a valley

of my dim features.
I am Albania,
I am on the Rhine.

It is autumn,
I smell the rain,
I see children running

through columbine.
I am honey
I am several winds.

My nerves dissolve,
my limbs wither-
I don't love you.

I don't love you.

~James Tate

today is blue

Sunny San Diego is finally starting to let fall in...nice and chilly...a little rainy and a lot gloomy
I love this weather chage but, for some reason, as usual, it takes a toal on my mood. I feel sleepier, gloomier, more nostalgic and just overall stranger.

Anyway, logged on to Urban Outfitters today and found a lovely surprise! If you log on to their home page there is a link to Itunes...there is a free playlist availible for download with a total of 22 songs! Its not my favorite of their free downloads selcetions but, it's not bad...there is some Cass McCombs, Girls, The XX, etc.

Definately worth the free download I'd say!

I am going to post the best and worst of spring 2010 runway shows a little later but in the mean time this Giles Deacon collection really caught (and kept!) my eyes. I love the color combination of brighter spring corals and ruequoises mixed with warm, milky, cream and neautral colors...so beautiful. I also love the old school feminie vibe! The corsets dresses are beautifully tailored and the somehow sexily modest structure is incredible!

Definately one of my faovirties thus far!

There is miss posh spice at the show...looking scary might I add!

For the complete collection, go to style.com!

....Allright I am going with a classic today. "The Raven," by the brilliant Edgar Allen Poe is one of my favorite romantic poems. I actually have a tattoo inspired by the poem! Anyway, I choose this one today for its dreary and gloomy mood. I love it because though its quite a morbid and depressing poem in nature, it is someone beautiful. Enjoy!

The Raven

[First published in 1845]

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
`'Tis some visitor,' I muttered, `tapping at my chamber door -
Only this, and nothing more.'

Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December,
And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor.
Eagerly I wished the morrow; - vainly I had sought to borrow
From my books surcease of sorrow - sorrow for the lost Lenore -
For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels named Lenore -
Nameless here for evermore.

And the silken sad uncertain rustling of each purple curtain
Thrilled me - filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before;
So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating
`'Tis some visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door -
Some late visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door; -
This it is, and nothing more,'

Presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating then no longer,
`Sir,' said I, `or Madam, truly your forgiveness I implore;
But the fact is I was napping, and so gently you came rapping,
And so faintly you came tapping, tapping at my chamber door,
That I scarce was sure I heard you' - here I opened wide the door; -
Darkness there, and nothing more.

Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,
Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before
But the silence was unbroken, and the darkness gave no token,
And the only word there spoken was the whispered word, `Lenore!'
This I whispered, and an echo murmured back the word, `Lenore!'
Merely this and nothing more.

Back into the chamber turning, all my soul within me burning,
Soon again I heard a tapping somewhat louder than before.
`Surely,' said I, `surely that is something at my window lattice;
Let me see then, what thereat is, and this mystery explore -
Let my heart be still a moment and this mystery explore; -
'Tis the wind and nothing more!'

Open here I flung the shutter, when, with many a flirt and flutter,
In there stepped a stately raven of the saintly days of yore.
Not the least obeisance made he; not a minute stopped or stayed he;
But, with mien of lord or lady, perched above my chamber door -
Perched upon a bust of Pallas just above my chamber door -
Perched, and sat, and nothing more.

Then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling,
By the grave and stern decorum of the countenance it wore,
`Though thy crest be shorn and shaven, thou,' I said, `art sure no craven.
Ghastly grim and ancient raven wandering from the nightly shore -
Tell me what thy lordly name is on the Night's Plutonian shore!'
Quoth the raven, `Nevermore.'

Much I marvelled this ungainly fowl to hear discourse so plainly,
Though its answer little meaning - little relevancy bore;
For we cannot help agreeing that no living human being
Ever yet was blessed with seeing bird above his chamber door -
Bird or beast above the sculptured bust above his chamber door,
With such name as `Nevermore.'

But the raven, sitting lonely on the placid bust, spoke only,
That one word, as if his soul in that one word he did outpour.
Nothing further then he uttered - not a feather then he fluttered -
Till I scarcely more than muttered `Other friends have flown before -
On the morrow he will leave me, as my hopes have flown before.'
Then the bird said, `Nevermore.'

Startled at the stillness broken by reply so aptly spoken,
`Doubtless,' said I, `what it utters is its only stock and store,
Caught from some unhappy master whom unmerciful disaster
Followed fast and followed faster till his songs one burden bore -
Till the dirges of his hope that melancholy burden bore
Of "Never-nevermore."'

But the raven still beguiling all my sad soul into smiling,
Straight I wheeled a cushioned seat in front of bird and bust and door;
Then, upon the velvet sinking, I betook myself to linking
Fancy unto fancy, thinking what this ominous bird of yore -
What this grim, ungainly, ghastly, gaunt, and ominous bird of yore
Meant in croaking `Nevermore.'

This I sat engaged in guessing, but no syllable expressing
To the fowl whose fiery eyes now burned into my bosom's core;
This and more I sat divining, with my head at ease reclining
On the cushion's velvet lining that the lamp-light gloated o'er,
But whose velvet violet lining with the lamp-light gloating o'er,
She shall press, ah, nevermore!

Then, methought, the air grew denser, perfumed from an unseen censer
Swung by Seraphim whose foot-falls tinkled on the tufted floor.
`Wretch,' I cried, `thy God hath lent thee - by these angels he has sent thee
Respite - respite and nepenthe from thy memories of Lenore!
Quaff, oh quaff this kind nepenthe, and forget this lost Lenore!'
Quoth the raven, `Nevermore.'

`Prophet!' said I, `thing of evil! - prophet still, if bird or devil! -
Whether tempter sent, or whether tempest tossed thee here ashore,
Desolate yet all undaunted, on this desert land enchanted -
On this home by horror haunted - tell me truly, I implore -
Is there - is there balm in Gilead? - tell me - tell me, I implore!'
Quoth the raven, `Nevermore.'

`Prophet!' said I, `thing of evil! - prophet still, if bird or devil!
By that Heaven that bends above us - by that God we both adore -
Tell this soul with sorrow laden if, within the distant Aidenn,
It shall clasp a sainted maiden whom the angels named Lenore -
Clasp a rare and radiant maiden, whom the angels named Lenore?'
Quoth the raven, `Nevermore.'

`Be that word our sign of parting, bird or fiend!' I shrieked upstarting -
`Get thee back into the tempest and the Night's Plutonian shore!
Leave no black plume as a token of that lie thy soul hath spoken!
Leave my loneliness unbroken! - quit the bust above my door!
Take thy beak from out my heart, and take thy form from off my door!'
Quoth the raven, `Nevermore.'

And the raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting
On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door;
And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming,
And the lamp-light o'er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;
And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor
Shall be lifted - nevermore!

well, i guess love is real folks.

Well I have been doing pretty well after this whole break up thing...but for some odd reason, tonight, although i went out wih friends and very cute guys, i feel very lonely and am thinking about him more. I am so hurt..wasn't much closure, I suppose.
So I have been listening to M Ward and reading some more soppy poetry.

One of my favorites is this one...by Matthew Arnold. My favorite poem of is the "The Burried Life." "Dover Beach" is good as well. But I love this poem about love. The side that isn't glamorized and is far more real. The pain and feeling of loss and the feeling of not knowing what to do with yourself because you are so lost in your own mind over someone.

Isolation: To Marguerite
We were apart; yet, day by day,
I bade my heart more constant be.
I bade it keep the world away,
And grow a home for only thee;
Nor fear'd but thy love likewise grew,
Like mine, each day, more tried, more true.

The fault was grave! I might have known,
What far too soon, alas! I learn'd--
The heart can bind itself alone,
And faith may oft be unreturn'd.
Self-sway'd our feelings ebb and swell--
Thou lov'st no more;--Farewell! Farewell!

Farewell!--and thou, thou lonely heart,
Which never yet without remorse
Even for a moment didst depart
From thy remote and spher{`e}d course
To haunt the place where passions reign--
Back to thy solitude again!

Back! with the conscious thrill of shame
Which Luna felt, that summer-night,
Flash through her pure immortal frame,
When she forsook the starry height
To hang over Endymion's sleep
Upon the pine-grown Latmian steep.

Yet she, chaste queen, had never proved
How vain a thing is mortal love,
Wandering in Heaven, far removed.
But thou hast long had place to prove
This truth--to prove, and make thine own:
'Thou hast been, shalt be, art, alone.'

Or, if not quite alone, yet they
Which touch thee are unmating things--
Ocean and clouds and night and day;
Lorn autumns and triumphant springs;
And life, and others' joy and pain,
And love, if love, of happier men.

Of happier men--for they, at least,
Have dream'd two human hearts might blend
In one, and were through faith released
From isolation without end
Prolong'd; nor knew, although not less
Alone than thou, their loneliness.

Kind of helped me to say...Goodbye and realize that I am going to feel like this I suppose for a little while.
I guess the bright side is that now I can activly continue my pursuit for Andy Samberg <3

so ...Goodbye...

i guess

upcoming shows in southern california...

Last week I saw Zion I, one of my favorite hip bands! So anyway, I realized that going to the movies these days is like at least 12 dollars and you usually wind up seeing some lame, crude humored movie just because there was nothing else to do that night. Zion I was at UCSD's The Loft and was only 13 $. So anyway, now I am way more inspired to save my money for actual, solid, good entertainment that may stick with me....

~Kolding

So the other weekend I went to the San Diego Mueseum of Modern Art. There was lots of really rad exhibits. My favorite was this viedo piece that discussed the creation of the first American dictionary. It was beautifully written and nice to listen to. However, I found this artust tht I really like named Jakob Kolding. This exhibitions consisted of lots of collages with buildings, photogrpahs, and a lot of action heros like Batman in them, to create a political message. The other exhibit was called "Museums in Miniture," with collage like mixed media by Joseph Cornell and Marcel Duchamp.

check out mcasd.com for upcoming exhibits...

This past weekend I went to an art show in Carlsbad, CA. It was awesome. I went with some friends and no prior knowledge to the art that I was about to embark on. I kind of assumed it was going to be some generic graffiti art or something but, I actually LOVED the paintings in there. The two artist's work displayed at the show were the works of Raziah Roushan and Matty Davis. I have to say that my favorite work was from Matty's collection. it even inspired some new tattoo ideas (uh oh!)

Also, there is this wonderful new website I discovered through another blog called thecompanyofpeople.com. It has several artists filled with porfolios of collages, photograhy, painting, sculptures, etc. I find the collections to be very minimal and raw. There is no obvious digital photoshopping or anything too strange. There are some great pieces here.

Here is one of my favorite by photographer, Ellen Rogers.

Ms. Rogers actually inspired me to do some shoots of my own. I love the warm, creamy colors she used and this blurry, surreal, dream-like mood that she creates. So stunning!!

Okay lastly, with all this art blogging I just have to say that this new fascination/obsession with this whole art scene right now is making me ill. If i see one more person with an arts and sketches photo album on their damn facebooks i just might be sick!! Of course, there are some great artists that want to display theri art which is awesome and entertaining. However, not everyone is an artst. I am not! Move On people!!

P.S. I have been going through a hard time with my love life. The kind of pain where it hurts your heart so much you feel nauseous because your heart is literally in your stomach. I cannot believe how artificial people can be. And...fickle! So hurtful...but anyway so I have been reading a lot more poetry in the ast few days. Strangely enough though, I haven't really had much inspiration to actually write any of my own poetry which is strange because usually hearbreak is my biggest motivator. BUt, I assume this is because it might be too painful to write about yet. Kind of trying to forget i suppose. I am, indeed, feeling much better I must say. And to end my little mushy schpeil, I have to say what wonderful friends (and even ex boyfriends) I have. They have all been so supportive and kind to me. Love them all...

Hate Blows a Bubble of despair by E.E. Cummings

hate blows a bubble of despair into

hugeness world system universe and bang

-fear buries a tomorrow under woe

and up comes yesterday most green and young

pleasure and pain are merely surfaces

(one itself showing, itself hiding one)

life's only and true value neither is

love makes the thickness of the coin

comes here a man would have from madame death

nevertheless now and wihtout winter spring?

she'll spin that spirit her own fingers with

and give him nothing (if he should not sing)

how much more than enough for both of us

darling. And if i song you are my voice,
